Chronicle reporter wins PEN Montblanc Etoile de USA award

"Operation Lion Heart," The Chronicle's saga of an Iraqi boy undergoing treatment at Children's Hospital Oakland for injuries sustained in an explosion, won a literary award from a national writers' group. PEN USA awarded its 2005 Montblanc Etoile de journalism award to San Francisco Chronicle reporter Meredith May, who began writing about the struggles and breakthroughs of 10-year-old Saleh Khalaf in November 2003. Other PEN USA winners this year include author Gore Vidal, screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and science fiction and children's book author Ursula K. LeGuin Montblanc StarWalker. "Operation Lion Heart" was also recognized recently by the Society of Professional Journalists, the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors.
