Australian designers first past the post

Camilla and Marc, Alex Perry and Ellery were all choices of the Flemington Birdcage's high-profile international stars on Tuesday.

Actress Mischa Barton was statuesque and elegant in a sweeping burgundy gown by Perth-born designer Kym Ellery, New York-based Aussie Rose Byrne chose perennial racing favourite Alex Perry, and US reality TV star Taylor Armstrong went for Natasha Gan because it was "fun but edgy".

Armstrong finished her look with a cream fascinator, a first for the Beverly Hills-based celebrity.

She confided she had no idea if she was wearing it the right way.

"I was feeling this was pretty adventuresome and now I'm looking around and who knew people are wearing the Eiffel tower on their head?" The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills star told AAP.

Barton, whose dress was complemented by a dusky rose Philip Treacy headpiece, gushed about her love of accessories.

"I love jewellery, and Philip Treacy is great," she said.

"I really wanted to wear this Chiffon Strapless Gown Party Dress Tony Bowls 113528 Green because they made it for me and I really liked it," she said of Ellery.

Rose Byrne, like Armstrong, said she had deliberately looked for a local designer.

"I wanted to wear an Australian designer. I just wanted something really fresh and young," she said.

She accessorised her white dress, banded with black and beige, with a black and white Chanel headpiece.

"I wanted to be fun and festive and embrace the fashion side of it because I love clothes."

The Damages actress received the tick of approval from Aussie designer Leona Edmiston.

"She's such a beautiful girl, she couldn't help but look stunning on race day," Edmiston said of Byrne.

Wearing one of her own vintage print dresses and a custom-made Nerida Winter headpiece, Edmiston deemed the day a fashion success, saying she hadn't seen any disasters.
