Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva says in-form striker Luis Suarez is now the best player in the Premier League. The Uruguay striker took his Premier League tally to 19 in 12 games with two goals in the 3-1 win over troubled Cardiff at Anfield which took the Reds above leaders Arsenal - for another day at least. Suarez signed a long-term contract on Friday - reportedly worth £175,000-a-week - and Lucas says he deserves every penny. The last four teams to occupy that position went on to win the title but even with Suarez in the form he is Lucas insists they are taking nothing for granted. "We are top of the league until Monday. It is good to be there, it gives you a lot of confidence," the Brazil midfielder told LFC TV. HALF PRICE DAY PASS Get 50 per cent off a Sky Sports Day Pass from NOW TV. "If we keep the same mentality playing as a team I think we will have a good season and a positive one. "We go into the next two games knowing they are crucial but with a lot of confidence, especially after winning four games in a row."
"What he is doing this season and what he has done in the past few seasons he deserved that," said Brazilian Lucas of his fellow South American. "We can see he is really comfortable playing here. It (the contract) is a positive message because the owners and manager said they want to keep their best players and at the moment he is not only our best player but the best player in the league. "Hopefully he will maintain this form for a long time for the club." If Arsenal fail to beat Chelsea on Monday, Liverpool will go into their Boxing Day clash with Manchester City top of the league. Krul believes there are "exciting times" ahead for Newcastle, and the keeper says United are "looking up the table" going into the hectic Christmas programme. Newcastle were impressive in beating Crystal Palace 3-0 at Selhurst Park on Saturday, a result that keeps them in sixth place. Krul, who was awarded the Premier League player of the month award for November, has now kept six clean sheets so far this season and feels if the players can keep up their recent form they can enjoy their festive schedule. "We are over the moon," he said. "It is a quick recovery for Thursday but what a confidence boost and we can keep looking up. "You have so many games, this was the first of five in two weeks. It is exciting times, especially when you win like that and now I'm looking forward to two home games." The comprehensive victory followed impressive wins at Tottenham and Manchester United, meaning Newcastle have now won five games away from home this season. At this stage last year Pardew's side were still searching for their first away success and Krul believes it is the strength in depth which has made the difference. "To win 3-0 at Crystal Palace in these conditions we can be proud of ourselves," he added. "It is the spirit and confidence in each other. We have fantastic players, even coming off the bench and giving us extra spark. It makes the difference." "It is a great confidence boost again, this season we feel we can beat anybody and in these game we showed our footballing quality and bossed it really."
