ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Voters are headed to the polls today for a federal byelection in Labrador.

The riding became vacant when Conservative Peter Penashue resigned in March as intergovernmental affairs minister.

Penashue quit after he overspent in the 2011 federal campaign and took illegal election contributions.

He is running against Liberal candidate Yvonne Jones and New Democrat hopeful Harry Borlase.

Jones is a former provincial Liberal party leader and 17-year veteran of the legislature, while Borlase is a northern issues researcher and newcomer to politics.

Penashue defeated former Liberal incumbent Todd Russell in the last election by just 79 votes to win the only Conservative seat in the province.
