Electric vehicles

Electric vehicles aren't a new idea. Electric cars were very popular back in the 19th an 20th century where cars were only used to travel short distances and that is why it is favored over he combustion engines. However, once gasoline engines advanced and people realised that cars run by petrol could go greater distances than electrical powered cars, they lost popularity and faded out of the picture.

But the issue of the environment have once again brought electric cars back into the picture. Many car manufacturers are putting in effort to develop an electric car system than can run on battery as well as fuel in the past decade. Here are the types that are in use today:

Deep Cell Lead Acid Batteries

This is the oldest type of battery that is being used now. This multi-purpose battery was considered as the first choice when we think of using electric to power cars. With this type of batteries, cars will be able to travel up to 80 miles before it require a recharge. In the 19th and 20th century, most people only needed to travel from 12 to 20 miles and with the 80 miles limit that you can get from these batteries, it seems more than enough.

Lithium Ion Batteries

Lithium ion electric vehicle batteries are coming into their own. These batteries are able to go 220 miles or about the same distance as an average fill up of petrol on one charge making them the favourite among electric car manufacturers. These batteries have made it possible for people to own electric vehicles for driving short distances, which is good for the environment. What's more, some of these batteries recharge in as little as three hours.

The Future

However, the battery designers and manufacturers haven't stopped there, they are determined to make these types of cars affordable and functional to the masses as soon as possible. To allow people to travel faster, a lot of work have been done to make lighter lithium ion batteries that require a shorter charging time. Ultimately, car manufacturers hope to create electric cars that can be used for long distance travel and any recharge that needs to be done can be done quickly with a power unit similar to petrol cars refilling fuel.

Car manufacturers, petrol stations and even hotels are working together in order to make this a reality so that you can just stop and recharge your car like how you do it with a fuel-powered car.

But for now, electric cars are still meant for short distance travels but it will not be long for us to the see electric cars that can go he distance.
