MONTREAL - A Montreal boy who was 12 years old when he allegedly shot his brother to death will remain in a detention centre pending his trial.

A youth court judge announced her ruling this afternoon.

The boy is charged with manslaughter and faces other charges related to an alleged armed robbery a few days before the death of his 16-year-old brother.

Judge Dominique Wilhelmy said the accused still presents a danger to society because of drug and alcohol consumption.

She dismissed the notion of sending the boy to live with his mother and grandmother, saying they would not be able to exercise the necessary parental authority to look after him.

The accused is now 13 years old.
