Travis d'Arnaud ended an afternoon of offensive futility in the 12th inning, with his ground ball RBI single lifting the new York Mets over the Miami Marlins, 1-0. New york had loaded the bases against Zach Phillips (0-1) with no outs in the inning, but it was up to d'Arnaud after Zach Lutz and Andrew Brown each grounded into force outs at home plate. On the third pitch he saw from Ryan Webb, d'Arnaud grounded one just past the reach of shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria to bring home the winning run. It was only New York's seventh hit of the game. The Marlins had plenty of chances, but were a brutal 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 men on base. They left a runner at second in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Vic Black (1-0) picked up the win with a perfect 12th, finishing off an impressive start from Dillon Gee, who went 7 1/3 frames and struck out eight. He allowed six hits and two walks.

Final Score: San diego 4, Atlanta 0

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Burch Smith took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before earning his first major league victory in the San Diego Padres' 4-0 triumph over the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field. Smith (1-1) allowed three hits in all over a sensational seven-inning stint in which the rookie struck out a career-high 10 batters. He got support from Chase Headley, who homered for a third straight day while finishing 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Tommy Medica added a solo homer, while Will Venable had three hits and scored a run to help San diego take the rubber match of this three-game set and deal the Braves their first series loss at home since the All-Star break. Atlanta had its magic number to clinch the NL East remain at four with the setback. Julio Teheran (12-8) worked 6 2/3 innings for the Braves and surrendered all four runs on seven hits while striking out six.

Final Score: Washington 11, Philadelphia 2

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Wilson Ramos finished 4-for-4 with a home run and five RBI as Washington downed Philadelphia, 11-2, in the rubber match of a three-game set. The NL leader in wins recorded his third straight victory with the effort. Roger Bernadina doubled twice and scored once for the Phillies, who lost for only the third time in their last nine, with Kevin Frandsen and Chase Utley knocking in a run each. Final Score: Milwaukee 6, Cincinnati 5

Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Sean Halton capped the comeback with the game-winning homer in the bottom of the ninth, as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied over the final two innings to take a 6-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Jean Segura's two-run triple and a sac fly from Jonathan Lucroy in the eighth knotted the score, then Milwaukee received some incredible glove work from Carlos Gomez in the top of the ninth. Jay Bruce came up with two runners aboard and sent a shot to deep center field, but Gomez retreated toward the wall and jumped to rob him of a potential go-ahead homer. Halton then lifted the Brewers to the improbable win with his one-out blast over the left center field wall. Four different Reds relievers were charged with a run, with Zach Duke (1-1) serving up Halton's homer. The bullpen effort spoiled a solid outing from Bronson Arroyo, who allowed two runs on three hits and four walks in 6 1/3 innings. The Washington Nationals beat the Phillies on Sunday, bringing them back within 4 1/2 games of the Reds for the final wild card spot in the National League.

Jhoulys Chacin (13-9) was pegged with the loss after giving up six runs -- four earned -- on seven hits over four innings. Final Score: San francisco 4, Los angeles 3

Los angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Brett Pill's pinch-hit solo homer in the eighth inning was the difference, as San francisco topped Los angeles, 4-3, in the finale of a four-game series. Pill went deep off Paco Rodriguez (3-3) to give the visitors a one-run edge, and Sergio Romo eventually gained his 35th save, but not before walking a tightrope in the ninth. Nick Buss led off with a single, then was sacrificed to second. Dee Gordon followed with a base hit and stole second to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Mark Ellis fanned but Adrian Gonzalez was given a free pass to load the bases. However, pinch-hitter Yasiel Puig grounded into a force at second to end the game. Jean Machi (3-1) tossed a scoreless seventh frame for the defending World Series champs, who have won seven of their last 10. Ryan Vogelsong worked the first six, allowing seven hits and three runs. Hunter Pence slugged a pair of homers and drove in three for San francisco, which took down the NL West leaders by a combined 27-8 count in their three wins to cap the set.
