A Slim Winter - Important Tips for Keeping in Shape During the Cold Months Last evening I found myself trying on and dismissing several of my cocktail dresses. I would normally be excited to attend a fun party but no matter what I tried last night I could not feel comfortable. It took me seven outfit changes before I looked at myself in the mirror critically and realized a dreadful fact; winter season's extra pounds had already made their way onto my arms and thighs.

Most of us gain a few pounds during winter. It seems that as the temperature begins to drop, so does our healthy lifestyle. It starts with the cold mornings that make it harder for us to wake up and make it to our gym session. We rather take a taxi or public transportation to go to work, we drive instead of walking. Getting a hot chocolate or our favorite coffee on the way to work feels so comforting that we forget to say "no whip cream." When we return home is usually dark outside and we just sit in front of the TV to vegetate for long hours before going to bed. These are just a few on a list of unhealthy habits that we seem to condone during the winter season.Getting back to last night, I only felt comfortable wearing my "body con dress" over a pair of black slimming tights with an oversized cardigan on top. Slimming tights fool me into thinking I still had my summer figure and an oversized cardigan took care of the chubbier arms. I didn't look so bad after all; it ended up being quite a chic outfit once accessorized with some chunky jewelry.

There was, however, one problem with my outfit choice for the evening. If I continue hiding the extra winter pounds under comfort clothes, by the time the sun shines again I'm going to spend the whole of spring and summer trying to loose weight. I have decided to take action and stop blaming the cold weather for my lazy winter lifestyle. This time I am having a slim winter that will assure I have a hot body for the summer.Here is a list of what I consider the three most important rules we must follow to achieve the slim winter goal:

Do not hide in baggy sweaters and slimming tights As much as it was comfortable to wear my oversized cardigan on top of my Herve Leger dress last night, I believe this habit is the most dangerous of the winter behaviors. Disguising in baggy sweaters and slimming tights will actually make you believe that even though you have been overeating there is a slim figure under what you are wearing. My advice is to remove the layers and tights and take a closer look. Instead of hiding under forgiving clothing, go for fitted winter clothes that will warn you if you are putting on weight.Make sure to exercise at least 3 times a week one way or another

Respect your weekly workout schedule and find the motivation to exercise at least 3 times during the week. Plan your workout routine for the week and stick to it. Write down the gym classes you plan to attend and post it on your door. Not all of us can afford personal training sessions but if you are thinking of booking a few, winter would be the right time to do it. Buy an updated fitness DVD to keep at home and force yourself to watch the DVD and exercise at home whenever you feel too lazy to go out for a workout.We seem to want to reward ourselves after a cold day with comfort foods. Looking out the window into a gloomy afternoon somehow convinces us that chocolates, cinnamon cakes and high calorie drinks are an acceptable winter routine. A larger portion of mash potatoes or pasta feels just right after freezing on the way back home. Nonetheless it is important to remember that if we sum up these additional culinary pleasures throughout winter the equation inevitably results in a few extra pounds of fat.
