Rest in peace to those who died during the hostage crisis in Manila yesterday.

Well in my last entry I had promised a report on my trip as soon as I get back.
It's actually been more than two weeks since I've gotten back, but with last minute
catching up of summer homework, taking my friend (who came to visit) shopping,
and just my usual procrastinating in general, I did not find a chance to write this entry
until now, and by now I realized that as much as Shanghai is just a bigger version of
where I live with less Cantonese people and more H&Ms, I do miss it, and I regret
not taking photos of a few places that are not particularly special but will make anyone,
tourist and local alike, feel snug and right at home, which for me, cannot be found often
in the crazily populated China (which I had far too much experience of this summer).

Alright end of the sentimental confessions, let's begin~

I went to Shanghai because I had to attend a course in a loooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng
building facing the Suzhou River (the classroom only occupied about a tenth of this loooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng building, two tenths was occupied by a bar,
and the rest was occupied by the post office). This place is actually quite close to
the Bund, so for the first three days I would trot across the river as soon as class
ends and explore the winding streets around the Bund. Even though there were a
lot of tourist traps (including the infamous Nanjing Road, where I was unable to
cross the first day because of a sudden bombardment of tourists), many of the
streets were empty and perfect for a stroll before dinner.

This street leads to the immensely populated Bund. When I was done
taking this picture I saw three tourist ladies walking down the road. I stood
aside to let them past, and suddenly a swarm of tourists came down like elephants.
I had to wait for a minute before I found a place to squeeze past them.

For those of you who don't understand Chinese,
the character on the windows is the Chinese character for "demolish".
When I was walking down this street, I heard an old Chinese tourist who was
walking in the opposite direction with his family say, "This is such a beautiful building!
Why are they destroying it?" I felt amused and sad at the same time.

This is horribly blurry picture is of a beautiful old apartment near the Bund. I
regret that I did not taking a picture of it when there was still light.

I took this on the way back to my hotel. Even though the view
here was nice, this place is radically different from the Bund.
There was almost no one here save for a
few bikers and a few passing French tourists.

Other notable places in this area include
Ningbo Road, which is practically a market.
Vendors sold vegetables right on the road, totally ignoring
the presence of cars (luckily there weren't many),
and the rest of the street was filled with people
walking or biking home clad with their groceries of the day.
I ate BBQ pork rice (microwaved) at a restaurant there
and finally heard Cantonese being spoken by people who
are not tourists. Of course, there is also Family Mart,
the cafe where I got internet access, the fruit store that played
old Jay Chou songs, and the bakery that deserves more attention
than it seems to be getting. I regret not taking pictures of these places.

Is this the end of my report? 'Course not. Stay tune for more tomorrow!

Hey fellas,

I am in Shanghai right now,

it's so grey all the time because of the rain,

but it's also very cool, so it's very comfortable!!

I don't have a computer with me,

and I just found this cafe that provides internet access,

but it's not cheap,

so I will take longer than usual to reply to messages, sorry!!!

I will write a more detailed entry about my trip when I get back~^^

FIFA!

July 04 [Sun], 2010, 19:30

Last night I was watching the match

that everyone was facebooking about today:

the match between Germany and Argentina.

The results are of course, inevitable,

because as we FIFA followers all know this year:

blue=sayonara world cup,

Mick Jagger was present,

and most importantly, Paul had chosen!

We also know that:

NONE OF THESE THINGS MATTER!

Germany was unbelievably amazing last night,

'nuff said.

Now go protect Paul from hungry Argentinian sports reporters.

So summer has started and my one week of true vacation is ending soon.

The upcoming weeks are going to be suffocating with test preps

and art assignments and a long long essay along with late night

World Cup sessions and midday replays of My Bloody

Valentine's "When You Sleep" on my stereo.

Fellas, check out My Bloody Valentine when you

can. It is pure magic.

"My tart! Who crushed my tart?!"

Yup. I went to watch Alice in Wonderland

on Monday. It was in 3D so my head

throbbed like mad when I walked out of the theater.

It was totally worth it though, because

even though the story wasn't brilliant,

the art and characters are.

I want a Chesire Cat now please and thank you.

Bought this yesterday.

It was love at first sight.
