A percussion group from France turned the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing into an enchanted land of fairy tales on Monday night. The show, combining Ra-VEL's music with film and percussion performance, was especially tailored for children to celebrate the International Children's Day.
The show employs multi-media technology to narrate the classic stories of Little Red Riding Hood, the Sleeping Beauty, and Tom Thumb.
But they are more than simple children's tales. In the background, a series of films underscore the spoken Chinese narration, and fixed images alternate with short sequences that play over the percussion.
At center stage remains the music. The group of French percussionists are skillfully banging marimbas, vibraphones, cymbals, and drums to create a whimsical kingdom of fairy tales with a cacophony of tones.
The group is called the Percussions Claviers de Lyon, and was established in 1983. It consists of five young percussionists who are known for their creative adaptations of classical music pieces fused with modern elements.
