Wedding belles back in dresses

SIXTEEN women donned their big white wedding dresses for a second time at the weekend - all in the name of charity.

The women, vying for the title of Bride of the Year 2012, paraded their gowns at the charity event at North Mackay Bowls Club on Saturday night - to raise money for Angel Flight and Ronald McDonald House.

Despite the competition, there wasn't a single "bridezilla" in the group said Jocelyn Fairbairn, of Jill Burston for Brides in Mackay.

"They all got on really well together," said Ms Fairbairn, who helped organise the event.

Cassie Graf took out this year's Bride of the Year title, sponsored by Dames and Dandies, and Lauren Hancock, who was sponsored by Solomons Flooring, was runner-up.

Joanne Mulcahy, who raised a staggering $7000 for the cause, won Charity Bride of the Year.

"They were judged on poise, BCBG MAX AZRIA Dresses and personality," Ms Fairbairn said.

"They all had their hair and make-up done again - they went to a lot of effort.

"They looked fabulous and all enjoyed wearing their gowns again."

The competition raised more than $20,000 for the charities.

"It was a full house," Ms Fairbairn said. "It was a terrific night."

She said the competition, in its second year, would become an annual event in Mackay. Next year the competition plans to support a breast cancer-related charity.
