Keep active to combat effects of aging

Roy Lee thinks young. The retired textile executive calculates three times a week at his retirement community to combat the effects of getting older.

At times he tones his arms and legs, at times Slim Xtreme Pills the focus may be the whole body, plus some days he tunes up his heart.

"We're less active as whenever we were working," said Lee, who resides in Greenville, South Carolina. "There's no question exercise keeps us limber and tones the muscles."

Lee has got the right idea, says Dr. John L. Sloan Jr. of Piedmont Family Practice, part of the Bon Secours Medical Group.

Staying active can help seniors in a number of ways, from staying flexible to maintaining mental ability, he states.

And it is never too late to start, says Dr. Charles Harpe, an internist with Park Ridge Health in Hendersonville.

"It can improve the standard of living," he states. "It's about quality."

Whether it's weight training, stretching, yoga or aerobics, whatever assists in keeping seniors moving is helpful, says Samantha Eckley, wellness coordinator in the Woodlands at Furman, a consistent care retirement community.

'Use it or Lose it'

"What I tell them is utilize it or lose it," she said. "If they want to stay independent, they have to maintain function and muscle mass."

Sloan, who is certified in geriatric medicine, says the elderly lose in regards to a third of their muscle tissue, making falling a significant concern. It's the most typical cause of accidental / accident death among people 65 and older, he states.

"We encourage regular exercise to prevent falls," he states. "Walking 150 minutes a week and doing some weight or strength training twice a week."

Balance exercises, like sitting on one foot and then the other for 10 seconds, are also important to prevent falls, he says.

People should start out gradually while increasing the game level each month, Sloan says. Walking is a great starting point. As well as for individuals with arthritis along with other painful conditions, swimming is a good activity.

Exercise results in larger muscle fibers that increase blood circulation so the heart and lungs do not have to work as hard, he says.

Weight-bearing exercise can slow bone loss, he says, while resistance training and stretching might help stiff shoulders.

"People have a tendency to lose using their shoulders because of pain," Sloan says. "If you possess your fingers together and set your arms up too deep, you're going to get it back moving."

Core exercises to bolster abdominal muscles can help back pain, he says. And heel pain could be eased by pulling one foot behind you and also stretching, he says, while stretching and slowly rotating the head can sort out neck pain.

Range-of-motion exercises might help prevent aches and pains overall, Eckley says.
